I spent a few formative years in Windsor, Ontario. For those of you out of town, it's the Canadian city with a permanent view of the Detroit skyline. Windsor's claim to fame was the mighty CKLW, an AM radio station with a few zillion watts of power, that specialized in broadcasting the Motown sound far and wide. If it happened in Detroit, it spun-up on a 45 RPM record at CKLW. And that's how we learned to love the Funk Brothers. Bob Babbitt and crew were the best.

The great thing about music in the 60's and 70's was that 5 to 10 seconds into a song you knew the artist or group. They all had a distinctive sound. For example, when Diann Ross cooed the first five notes of "Baby Love", you just knew it was going to be a hit. The Funk Brothers were the masters of shaping sound, rhythm (groove) and most of all...soul.

Great article! Fun to learn more about Bob! Sad to hear of his passing but his bass lines will live on forever.
