Welcome to the new series of Skin DEEP.

For those not familiar, here are the rules:

Look at the contenders and vote for the bass you think
is more beautiful.

Skin DEEP is a game of LOOKS ONLY. Do not consider
price, playability, brand loyalty, whether or not it is the bass
used by your favourite player...

Skin DEEP is a tribute to the designers and their visions of beauty!

The winner of each round will go on to face a new contender
the following week. Occasionally, we shake things up by
featuring two brand new contenders...in other words, if a bass
becomes unbeatable, we retire it and hold it in the wings for
the finals and medal rounds.

I do not vote in the competitions unless there is a tie at the time
of the contest close. I normally open and close the contest on Mondays
- the time of day can vary from first thing in the AM until suppertime.

Those are the rules, so let's get down to it.

This week - the freaks! Those odd creations that usually garner
oohs and aahs for their unusual beauty, but might not be basses you
could see yourself adding to your collection!

In the metallic black corner, a bass we featured in an article on Thunder Row.
Known for a unique ergonomic design, the Ritter Jupiter basses always
turn heads!

The Eye of Horus bass is a specialty version of the 6-string Jupiter.

Solid silver Eye of Horus inlay on the 12th fret, stunning metallic finish,
blue LED lights on the fretboard - suffice to say the EOH is both gorgeous
and freakish!

In the brown corner is another bass about which we did a write-up some
time back. The Rick Toone Orchid bass is also specially designed for
ergonomic comfort. You'll probably notice a trend in ergonomic basses
- they tend to buck the tide in terms of looks!

The Orchid bass is not only a beautiful (if not odd) contender,
but she also just so happens to be half-fretted and half-fretless!

Look at these clean lines and bold design!

So what's it gonna be, Thunder Row? In the battle of the oddballs,
which one of these striking axes will move on to the next round?

YOU DECIDE!

p.s. - you are welcome to scour the net for other pix if it helps
you make up your mind!

Uhm.....wow.

I guess I'm going with the Eye of Horus on the balance of it seeming better than the other.

Are you guys kidding? These basses are both stunning in their individuality!

Ugly stick, my ear!

I like them both for their originality. The idea of an ergonomic bass is quite appealing, but the curvy swoopiness of the Eye Of Horus is more pleasing to me than the more abrupt shape changes of the Orchid.

Well, now, they both definitely are full of individuality, I cannot deny that. :)

Wow, got to go with the Orchid. But would not want to own either!!!

I dated a girl named Dolores
Whose curves were like the Eye of Horus
She drove a Ford Taurus
Washed her mouth with Lavoris
And asked me to kiss her ...

um ...

orchid bass.

:p

As a sitting-down, playing on the lap bass, the orchid does hold a certain appeal:

Given the ergonomics, I can see the orchid being good for someone in an orchestral or big-band setting, or for people with back trouble who can't stand for extended periods of time, etc.

The Orchid's got a lot of appeal to me, too - the design is great for people who play sitting down. I love that flat ridge on the back of the neck! Great concept.

And a snappy little poem you wrote there, too!

:D

On the other hand, the EOH looks great when being played on stage. With those LEDs all lit up. I'm a sucker for lights and shiny things!

I'd give away body parts to own either one of these yummy freakazoids! Anybody want to loan me $12,000.00?

If this were a carnival show, both of these basses would definitely be INSIDE the tent, right next to the bearded lady and the man who can make his eyes pop out. I'll go with the Ritter.

Man, just because someone "can" do it, does NOT mean they "should"

My money would not go towards either of these contenders but as far as the better of the bad goes . . . . I'm reluctantly putting a vote forward for the Orchid. :(

LOL...I have a feeling that whichever bass wins this round will be beaten to death with a baseball bat in next week's round.

Well, if you need an ugly stick to go beat these basses up some more this is the way to
go, simply unbreakable and by the way, you can catch a BASS with it!!!

Where did you find THESE?

I though the others were WIERD!

It just so happens that I found them in the news.

The EOH bass is on the top of every list when it comes to articles about exotic, unusual basses.

Phil Lesh's Eye of Horus bass was just acquired by the Smithsonian Museum - that's just how wonderful it is. :D

I found the Orchid in an article about ergonomics.

Shall I start passing out the baseball bats?

Pass out baseball bats? What, and ruin a perfectly good piece of maple or ash on destroying one of these things? :)

I need more smileys to cover my hind end on this one.

Hey 'meaux; have you made a tie-breaking vote in one of these contests? I know there was one where you voted on behalf of someone else, but I can't recall if you've made one of your own. Be kinda funny if this ends up being the first ... ;)

I voted in the very first round of Skin DEEP to break the tie between the Jazz and the Hofner. The Jazz went on to great heights in the contest!

I think that was my only actual vote.

To break the tie between these two freakish beauties would be rough. I think they're both so wonderful!!!

Really? Hmmmm . . . That is indicative of some form of mental instability.

I'm thinkin' some kind of disqualification is in order. ;)

Hmmmm . . .

Don't think I stated that quite right. :o

Anyone who views either of these two basses, let alone BOTH, as "wonderful", is obviously . . . . . . . . . . .

well, you get my drift, eh? ;)

...an aficionado of beauty outside the box.

I agree. You're so right.
