Welcome to the new series of Skin DEEP.
For those not familiar, here are the rules:
Look at the contenders and vote for the bass you think
is more beautiful.
Skin DEEP is a game of LOOKS ONLY. Do not consider
price, playability, brand loyalty, whether or not it is the bass
used by your favourite player...
Skin DEEP is a tribute to the designers and their visions of beauty!
The winner of each round will go on to face a new contender
the following week. Occasionally, we shake things up by
featuring two brand new contenders...in other words, if a bass
becomes unbeatable, we retire it and hold it in the wings for
the finals and medal rounds.
I do not vote in the competitions unless there is a tie at the time
of the contest close. I normally open and close the contest on Mondays
- the time of day can vary from first thing in the AM until suppertime.
Those are the rules, so let's get down to it.
This week - the freaks! Those odd creations that usually garner
oohs and aahs for their unusual beauty, but might not be basses you
could see yourself adding to your collection!
In the metallic black corner, a bass we featured in an article on Thunder Row.
Known for a unique ergonomic design, the Ritter Jupiter basses always
turn heads!
The Eye of Horus bass is a specialty version of the 6-string Jupiter.
Solid silver Eye of Horus inlay on the 12th fret, stunning metallic finish,
blue LED lights on the fretboard - suffice to say the EOH is both gorgeous
and freakish!

In the brown corner is another bass about which we did a write-up some
time back. The Rick Toone Orchid bass is also specially designed for
ergonomic comfort. You'll probably notice a trend in ergonomic basses
- they tend to buck the tide in terms of looks!
The Orchid bass is not only a beautiful (if not odd) contender,
but she also just so happens to be half-fretted and half-fretless!
Look at these clean lines and bold design!
1145
- just click for a closer view -
So what's it gonna be, Thunder Row? In the battle of the oddballs,
which one of these striking axes will move on to the next round?
YOU DECIDE!
p.s. - you are welcome to scour the net for other pix if it helps
you make up your mind!
