If you are looking for a cheap and fast D.A.W. you might want to consider getting Reaper (http://www.reaper.fm)

so what makes it so special ?

1 Unlike most Big Brand DAW's it only comes in 1 version and not in a range of products where you pay extra for additional features.
They only have 1 program that you can buy at a discount ($60 USD) if you are an individual or small business or educational. If you do not qualify for the discount the full commercial license is sill pretty cheap for a DAW ($225 USD)
there is no difference in the software between the discount and commercial license.
They call this their "Fair Price" policy

2.It's fast to load. Compared to my Cubase (that came with my Interface) Reaper launches a LOT faster

3. Customizable, you have a lot more freedom to customize the program compared to other products.

4. No Copy Protection. So you don't need a USB-Dongle ot any other copy-protection scheme. For example Cubase needs a USB Stock (eLicenser) to work (unless you have the Elements version) and I think Pro Tools and such also require such a key.

Other products like Ableton Live requires a software activation, so when your system crashes you might need to contact them to be able to activate Live again.

5 ...

If you are interested have a look at their site (http://www.reaper.fm/index.php) and download their trial version.

I love Reaper. I'm using it to record my band's album and it just works. Just wish I were more knowledgeable about recording in general so I knew all of the powerful tools I have at my disposal but I'll get there.

If you want more training you might want to consider going to Groove3 (http://www.groove3.com/str/search.php?mode=search&page=1) or MacProVideo (http://www.macprovideo.com/tutorials/reaper-application) both offer training for Reaper but they are not for free. I cannot say which one of these is better.

Thanks for this Patrick. I have recently been delving into the world of recording (a very confusing subject for the novice) and good information is a godsend.
