Durn tootin. Playing Rockband has made me a better bass player, and playing bass has made me a better Rockband player. RB reeeally gives your fretting hand a workout in the expert mode. Songs like Foreplay/Long Time by Boston and Aqualung by Jethro Tull are veeerrrry hard to play well in RB. I do my real bass guitar warmup exercises on RB and then go do my lessons/songs on real bass.

About ROCKBAND, but I got Guitar HERO a few years ago, I found that playing GH messed up my timing with the bass on songs I played. I figured that because it is a visual cue as opposed to an audible one, it made me think different.

Maybe JUST me.

I liken the visual nature of the game to the way Roy shows the visual fretboard with moving dots to practice the bass lessons.

As far as Guitar Hero goes, I've never cared for it. The button-style frets are hard to use. I much prefer the flatter, recessed frets of Rockband controllers. For me, they allow a smoother flow between notes, and you can do HOPOs with greater ease because you can slide between frets without the bump-bump-bump of the Guitar Hero controller buttons.

Guitar Hero loyalists will make their own set of complaints about the RB controllers. Each camp of players seems quite loyal to their own.

But I agree with you that the game can affect the way you play a song when you pick up your real ax. If there's a game song that you also play on a real bass, it can get pretty wacky trying to shift your thinking from toy bass to real bass. If I've been doing one version, I often have to play the other version several times to get the memory-burn out of my head.

But...anything's good that keeps the wheels warm in this old brain...

I think that Rock Band is the one that is coming out with REAL guitar version?

I saw a comercial for it once. I told my kid, if you spent half od the time you spend on video games on playing guitar, you would be a bad ass.

I have found the "game" versions of playing the bass just too crude and non-intuitive for me. I don't ever play someone else's song exactly the way they did, note for note. I want to play it the way I hear it happening in my head and that is just one large frustration for me with these video games. BTW, if I wanted to hear the original as played, I put the CD on.

Talking to my son the other day about this new Rock Band game and he indicated that there is to be some award that can be released on the game if someone can actually play all the instruments in the band, exactly as programmed.

WHY????

I also understand that there may be a quite expensive guitar coming from Fender that connects to this game and allows the player to use an actual guitar. Two grand for a video game controller?

Again, WHY????

Sorry, that's my "Old Grouch" coming through. ;)
