  • Thread Starter: When? Where? Who?

This could be interesting: When did you first become aware of the bass? Where were you, and who was playing? In my case, I listened to a lot of music in the fifties and early sixties, but it wasn't until I saw The Beatles on Ed Sullivan that - despite the low-fidelity speakers of the old Zenith 16" black and white set - I really became aware of the instrument. The song was She Was Just Seventeen It was an epiphany!

Don't remember how old I was but I know when I heard "I'll Take You There" by the Staple Singers I was hooked. My feet had to dance and I was drawn to the Low Side of the Force. Unfortunately I took about 30 years or so to actually pick up a bass. DOH!!

I was at high school back in the mid seventies and a few guys put a band together who got to perform for everyone at assembly one day, they introduced each member of the band individually and when it was the bass players turn he thundered out the riff from smoke on the water, and I felt every note, I just sat there thinking how cool is that. But it also took me about 30 years to pick one up.

In the late 60's to early 70's several coworkers of mine were into country music and also played instruments. They would regularly get together after work to jam and one day I decided to stop by and listen to them. When I walked in they were playing Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues and I immediately found myself bobbing back and forth to the bass. From that day forward I listen to music with the bass setting dominating. I didn't learn to love the bass from someone famous, just from several ordinary people who just loved country music!!!
