It's time for our annual Christmas Bass Poem Celebration, so I've scrounged around to find this old chestnut from within the TR archives!! Anybody else want to jot down a verse or two about Christmas and bassy-things, you are INVITED!!
'Twas the night before Christmas and in the Chateau
Not a bassist was playing - no sound from below.
The axes were propped by the chimney with care
All resting from those who had once played them there.
The students had gone to their homes far and near
To share with their loved ones the holiday cheer.
So Roy stood alone in the dark and he thought
'Bout all of the lessons and music he’d taught.
When outside the door there arose such a clatter
He turned on his heels to see what was the matter.
Away to the window he ran just to see
He pulled back the curtains - said, “What could it be?”
The moon in the sky, as it shone, gave a wink
And Roy, he knew not what to say, what to think.
Turning off from the highway, driving up through the glow
Was a sleigh full of people. But from where? Thunder Row!
With a Bluesman as driver, a smile on his face
Roy knew in an instant it was Lane on Bass.
He doffed his fedora and gave Roy a nod
Then slowed down the sleigh as he called to his squad.
"Yo, Patrick! Yo, Stanton! Yo, C-Note and Flame!
“Go set up the amps now - this sho ain’t no game!
“JThomas and Toby, you turn up the lights!
“It’s time for a party - the night of all nights!”
Roy couldn’t believe what was happening here
The students returning to give back the cheer.
He ran to the sleigh just to give them a hand
And laughed when emerged the TMBG band.
Shane Roberts and Larrance, McDonald in back
Were all there to groove and were all dressed in black.
They helped to unload heavy gear from the sleigh
Then into the Chateau they all went to play.
Outside in the night it got quiet once more
So the moon in the sky yawned and started to snore.
But he woke with a start when the music within
Just exploded - a volume that dimpled his chin!
Guitars they did scream and the drums they did boom!
How music erupted from inside the room!
But the loudest of all, filling all of the spaces
The thunderous rumble of multiple basses!
The moon rocked and rolled to the deep, growling grooves
So he heard not the sound of the approaching hooves.
No notice paid he to those reindeer that fly
Or the jolly old elf who had landed nearby.
A man in red velvet, black shades, a chapeau
Had heard of the people of old Thunder Row.
He’d come not with gifts, nor to crawl down the flue
But to join in the music - be one with the crew.
When he opened the door he saw Roy and the band
“Can I join in the session? I just love to jam!”
Roy turned to his students and asked if he might
And the students all opened their arms to invite!
Then Santa, he picked up a red Carvin bass
And made his own thunder all over the place!
And up in the sky did the moon beam and glow
For Roy and his students, and all Thunder Row!
