  • The Thunder Row 2011 ReCap

Now that we're entering a new year, let's get the BEST list going.

I know we are a smaller bass family than some of the big sites, but durnit, our lists count too!

Name your fave bass player of all time.

I'll compile the totals and prepare a top ten list. Let's see if a real star emerges.

Great! I like that this is "favourite bass player" rather than "greatest"!

On that basis, I'll nominate Jack Bruce.

My choices are always changing as I learn more about music, discover new music and am introduced to new things (to me). Currently my vote goes to Rocco Prestia.

"Favourite" keeps changing, but the bass player who had the most impact on me would be Jack Bruce and his Warwick fretless.

I have to go with Jack Casady today. May change tomorrow.

Technically, I should be all over Roger Waters, but I have to admit that before Waters, there was Larry Graham.

      So...Larry Graham for me.

This is difficult. There are so many great ones and so many different styles to choose from. But, if I have to choose one it would be Jack Casady.

I am going to have to say SMV as a whole. They are all innovators on their own.
But the combination of talent covers the broadest spectrum of sounds.

For me it would have to be Donald Duck Dunn .the first time i heard him play the bass line . from GREEN ONION i was hooked. that bass line still makes me feel the same way to day. thank you Donald Duck Dunn.there are others . but he was the one that made me FEEL the bass not necessarily just here it but really feel the BASS.

I've had various favorites (McCartney, Clarke, Nathan East) since I really started focusing on bass and bassists two years ago. I'm also especially impressed by Geddy Lee's ability to sing while playing intricate, highly syncopated basslines in not-so-common time signatures. In the end, the one bassist to whom I seem to keep coming back is James Jamerson. He's my favorite.

My fav is Jack Bruce. Still remember sitting about 20 feet away on the floor section of New Haven Arena circa 1967 and just being blown away.
