  • CRADLE YOUR BABY - We're On the Case!

While traveling recently, my airport concourse was crossed by a wonderful sight - a wheeled bass case! How indescribably cool! A little further investigation revealed that it was made by SKB who, among other things, make cases for military weaponry. Now we're talking! AND it's waterproof, so if your plane goes down over a sizable body of water, you can use it as a raft! This is travel insurance for my baby against the abuse of those occasional baggage handlers who fail to give her the cosseting she deserves.

What follows is from the company's website:

"Waterproof Injection Molded ATA Bass Guitar Case w/ Wheels(Fits any Precision/Jazz-style bass)

SKB is revolutionizing the industry again with the first INJECTION molded bass case! The 3i-5014-44 accommodates “Precision” and “Jazz” style bass guitars and is the latest size in SKB's 3i series of waterproof cases.

3i Series injection molded waterproof cases are constructed of ultra high-strength polypropylene copolymer resin and feature a gasketed, waterproof and airtight, submersible design (IP67) that is resistant to corrosion and impact damage. Its continuous molded-in hinge, patented "trigger release" latch system with TSA recognized and accepted locks, four reinforced locking loops for customer supplied locks, comfortable, snap-down rubber over-molded cushion grip handles, secure stacking, and automatic ambient pressure equalization valve (MIL-STD-648C) all contribute to its military grade design.

The plush interior provides total neck support and protection on all sides."

The case seems to run around $249 at most retailers, but you can probably find a bargain if you're persistent. Please note, you definitely ain't gonna fit this puppy in the overhead rack!

    Here's the web address: http://www.skbcases.com/music/produc...t=2&c=75&s=75#

Of course, there are hundreds of cases out there, each with pros and cons. What do you use to cradle your baby? Write and let us know! (Pix welcome!)

I have Levy's padded soft-side bags for my axes. I'm not on tour or on the road or anything, so the padded bags are just fine. They have pockets for accessories and such. I'm happy with them, but I can see where these flotation device things would be just the ticket for someone on tour. They look tough.

I have original hard cases for both my Fender and my MTD. The Tobias came with only a gig bag.

Unless I am travelling with vehicle full of gear, or flying, I use padded gig bags. The Tobias one is about worn out (I just had the zipper repaired and the handle reinforced) but still works. My MTD rides in a Warwick Rock Bag Pro that fits well, heavily padded, and straps down the neck for more control. Fender gets dragged around in a $50 cheapy bag of some unknown brand, but most of the time sits in its Fender hardcase.

I find the hard cases just too large and unwieldy for use for weekly gigs and practices and since I'm carrying the basses in the back seat area of my truck, I'm pretty careful with them.

I am considering taking my Squire home in its soft case as carry-on luggage - is this a bad idea? Come to think of it, it won't meet their size restrictions

The man you wanna talk to about travelling with basses is Lane on Bass. He's the grand poo bah on this kind of thing.

Dam that case looks a heck of a sight more comfortable than the plane seat ...maybe I'll strap the bass in economy class and put myself in the plush. I'm not a precision bass guitarist ..yet...but with a bit of dieting...

Now that you mention it, fumblefour, it does look pretty cozy compared to your typical "last class" airplane seat, doesn't it? Hmmm...
