  • THUNDERNEWS: Roy In The Spotlight

There's a new interview with Roy on the Bass Musician Magazine Website.

    Here's an excerpt:

FROM BEDROOM TO BUSINESS: HOW TO MAKE A LIVING AS A WORKING MUSICIAN WITH ROY VOGT

...In the weeks ahead, several full-time bassists will share their stories with us. They come from a variety of backgrounds and performance venues. While each will bring a unique insight, I challenge you to look for the common themes in their advice and to consciously apply their collective wisdom to your own skill set.

Without further fanfare, let’s start the series with Roy Vogt…

Roy Vogt is currently the coordinator of the Bass Department at Belmont University in Nashville, where he has taught since 1983. He has released two solo projects, Simplicity and Urban Legend as well as several instructional videos for Superchops4Bass and Master Study Series. His comprehensive multi-DVD course Teach Me Bass Guitar was released in 2009 and he is presenting his first Bass Camp in Nashville in July 2012. Tolearn more about Roy Vogt, visit www.royvogt.com and www.thunderrow.com.

    Good job, Roy!

Yeah, thanks for posting this +1! I wrote myself a sign based on Roy's advice in the article. Here's what I put down:

This is your Job Skill list:

      1. Can you sight-read anything put in front of you? Work with a conductor?

      2. Can you play convincingly in any style? Do you enjoy any style?

      3. Can you get along with virtually anyone?

      4. Can you double on electric, upright, fretless? Double on B3, synth, pedals? Double on rhythm, 2nd lead, or slide?

      5. Can you sing or scat the melody as written? Sing harmony?

      6. Can you do a jazz gig without a Real Book and a top40/variety band gig with absolutely no rehearsal because you know hundreds of songs from the 1930s to the present?

      7. Can you come up with a studio bass, piano, string, guitar, or vocal part in 6 minutes that sounds like you’ve played it for 6 months?

I put a copy on the back of my bathroom door so I see it when I get up in the morning, on the door to my studio, as the front page in my notebook, as a windows desktop on my computers, on the refridgerator, and on the visor in my truck. It's always in my face at home, in the truck and at work!

Since we are working on becoming an in-demand working musician, now we need a list of the top-ten-must-know songs in every style and decade and the most common keys to play them in. A nice list to work on. Any of you experienced pros care to start the threads for this?????

      Enjoy the journey!
      Mark
