  • Roy Vogt on TMBG And The Bass Fantasy Boot Camp!

Now that Teach Me Bass Guitar has earned its place as the best self-paced bass instruction course in the world, we thought we'd ask Roy to look back on its creation and tell us how he feels about its unparalleled success. He also tells us how he's looking forward to the Bass Fantasy Boot Camp this summer!!

TR: How do you feel about the success of the TMBG course?

    RV: Extremely flattered and fortunate!

TR: How did you come to team up with The Learning Dock to put this program together?

RV: My friend Celeste Myall, a fine violinist and music educator who was teaching at Belmont University at the time, recommended me to the folks at The Learning Dock - David and Barbara Crossman. We started production in October of 2008 and debuted the series at the Summer NAMM Show in Nashville in 2009.

TR: When it hit the market, did you imagine it would become the standard by which all other self-paced bass instruction programs would be judged?

RV: I had no idea it would be. We worked really hard to make it the best course we could, so it's rewarding that people think so. All our hard work paid off!

TR: Are you surprised by the large number of people in their 50s, 60s, and 70s who have bought the course?

RV: Not really. A lot of people enter into "Second Life" or "Third Life" when they've raised their kids, managed their careers and finally have some time on their hands to do something they've always wanted to. Fortunately, a lot of them want to play bass guitar!

TR: Did you have a particular demographic in mind when you created the program?

RV: We really designed it for anyone who wanted to learn bass guitar but didn't have access to quality instruction. Interestingly, a lot of teachers I know have bought it and are using it as an adjunct to their regular instruction with students.

TR: How important is it for your students to have a place like Thunder Row, where they can not only partake of resources and supplemental lesson material, but can also enjoy each other's company in a friendly social environment?

RV: I think it's a great place. I particularly like the civility of our forum members. It's very welcome. We want a friendly place where anyone who's interested in the bass can come to learn and feel at home.

TR: Thunder Row members give the course's LOOPS feature very high ratings. How did the idea for the loops come about?

RV: That is from the creative genius of David Crossman. He's made this project the culmination of several other instructional products he had worked on and wanted to make this the "Cadillac" of instructional methods. I think he's succeeded! Everyone loves the Loops Library.

TR: What about the "playalong" with the band feature?

RV: There are many instructional methods with playalong tracks on audio. We wanted to give the student the experience of playing with a top Nashville Studio Band on the screen every time they practice.

TR: Are you excited about the Fantasy Bass Boot Camp and meeting some of your TMBG students?

RV: Absolutely! I'm also happy to be spending time with my friends Brian Bromberg, Tim Smith, Adam Nitti and Bernhard Lackner. They are some of the finest Bassists and Bass Teachers anywhere and I will be happy to work with them to create the finest Fun and Educational Bass Camp we can. It's going to be a great time!

The Bass Fantasy Camp promises to be great fun for all who attend!

I enjoyed this interview, as it was good to hear Roy's views, and also understand a bit about how the course came to be.
