  • Muting Without A Scrunchie

Muting those ringing strings on a bass can involve palm or finger use...or a scrunchie? I did not know that wrapping a scrunchie over your frets could be a practical substitute for palm or finger muting.

But, apparently, the scrunchie is now OUT and the "FretWrap" is IN.

    From the Gruvgear Website:

    FretWraps

    Creative muting...without the scrunchie.

Finally, a professional string dampener/muting accessory that every studio, session player, and tapping aficionado should have!

Slide on a FretWrap to effectively cut overtones and sympathetic resonance during recording, live performance, two-hand tapping, or any creative situation where you need that extra muting hand for cleaner takes without the unwanted string noise or ringing.

The adjustable strap lets you fine-tune the pressure and dampening of the strings. Quickly slides over the headstock when not in use. No special guitar modification, installation, or tools required - Yet amazingly effective!

FretWraps come in 3-packs of the following sizes:

SM - Fits 4- to 5-string basses, 6-string electric and acoustic guitars
    MD - Fits 5- to 6-string basses & 6-string classical guitars
    LG - Fits 6- to 7-string basses & 7- to 8-string guitars

Endorsed by Anthony Wellington (Founder of Bassology teaching studio, Victor Wooten Band, Instructor at Bass and Nature Camp and Gerald Veasley's Bass Boot Camp)

Watch as bassist Ariane Cap demonstrates the advantages of slipping a FretWrap onto YOUR bass!

I'm really tempted to order a pack of these. At $30.00 for a three-pack, I think they could do my muting some good. If I do get a pack, I'll do a review.

Also, if anybody else here has tried these, let us know!!

I think you're right- you just slip it over the frets anywhere you want. It doesn't press on the strings hard enough to interfere with normal playing.

I bought a Gruv Gear fret-wrap when they were on sale. I like it. The difference is subtle, but it does take care of the noise to a moderate degree. I don't want to tighten it too much, lest it start damping the sustain too much, but all in all, a good product.

The best bass mute available IMHO is the Bass mute clamp. Easy to use, cheap, VERY effective and adjustable for it's muting effect.
They have a website with decent video demo etc

Oh! It goes at the bottom end of the strings. Very interesting. I'll be checking this one out. Thanks, Basso.

No probs. Just thought I'd let you know. They now have some much cheaper shipping options for the Bass Mute Clamp (I think it's because you can now get it without the little wooden box it originally came in) It looks like $25 including shipping worldwide for 1.
      Cheers
