To those who understand craftsmanship in musical instruments, Kevin Brubaker is legendary. For years, his custom basses have been among the most coveted among professional players who regard them as works of art both aesthetically and sonically. Needless to say, this kind of hand-crafted excellence comes at a price.
The good news announced at NAMM this week, however, is that Brubaker has premiered a line of production basses called the BRUTE Series that embody the years of experience that have gone in to those handmade instruments. The result is a line that may well be the new go-to workhorse for pro and semi-pro players. "The trick," says BRUTE rep Tom Richards, "was creating a bass that was affordable, but uncompromising." According to Roy Vogt, who kicked off NAMM week with a clinic at Nashville's legendary Corner Music - where the BRUTE debuted - "the BRUTE feels and plays like a $2500 - $3500 bass. The ash, rosewood, and maple construction is rock solid and, to be honest, quite heavy, but it's so carefully balanced you really don't feel the weight."
Brubaker is equally impressed with Roy's Teach Me Bass Guitar, and the two companies announced a partnership that will find Brubaker promoting TMBG in their packaging. Says Richards: "TMBG is, by far, the best produced teaching series we've ever seen. The quality is beyond anything that's out there and it will make better players of our customers at the beginning and intermediate-advanced levels. And better players make lifelong customers!"
Thunder Row presents the clinic for the edification of members and visitors with the caveat that the video was shot in-store and the quality is not remotely representative of TMBG course materials. Nevertheless, we thought you'd enjoy hearing Roy play a couple of tunes, and then illustrate some tips and techniques you might find helpful in your own play.
Have fun!
