I like Another Brick in the Wall's bassline.

Dance to the Music Sly and the Family Stone

I've Got the Music In Me - by Kiki Dee is an often overlooked thumper, too.

Darling Dear (James Jamerson) has the best bass line I've ever heard. After the opening, he never plays the same thing twice. I am dying to learn this one but it's way out of my league at this point. Thankfully, the fellow in this video put a link to a tab of the song. I've never been able to find a tab for this song before so that will help. I put the vid of this guy playing it so the bass is loud and clear. I could listen to this all day.

Taxman? Really? It's good that they recognized Sir Paul, but his bass line on Something (another Harrison tune) is much better IMHO.

Norman Watt-Roy, the bass player for Ian Dury and the Blockheads has done some fantastic stuff but, sadly, they never became mainstream because their brand of music is, to put it mildly, pretty rude stuff. One song though that has a great bass line and is G rated is, "My Old Man". Talk about a bass that just moseys along!

Think we have to ask ourselves? What makes a great bass line? Is it flashy? Does it stand out? Or maybe it is the line that just does it's job and fills the bottom end of a song. McVie with FleetwoodMac has some bass lines that are not flashy, but in the confines of the song.... They are AWESOME!

The bass throughout Natalie Cole's version of Irving Berlin's "Let's Face the Music and Dance" is phenomenal (if you've got some good speaker, give this a listen: . The most memorable bass line, for me, is McCartney's from "Penny Lane."

To me, a great bass line just cradles the music. It supports, leads, and drives the music and the direction it is going.

The bass is used by some as a solo instrument, and I respect that and their ability, but I particularly enjoy bass lines that simply drive the music along. Thunderman's suggestion of Sr. Paul in Penny Lane is but one great example!

I'm unfamiliar with Carol Kaye but after seeing one of her basslines make this list & learning Roy was a student, I'm gonna visit her web page right now.
