Following our BB theme (last month, Bryan Beller), this month we present bass virtuoso Bunny Brunel. When Chick Corea watched Bunny play one night with Brazilian pianist singer Tania Maria at The Ronnie Scott Club jazz club in London in 1978, Bunny was unaware of the ultimate significance Corea would play in his future success as a bassist.

Few weeks after that visit to London, Chick called Bunny and asked him to pack up and join him on a world wide tour. Bunny quickly accepted and went on to record

    Bryan Beller

This month’s bass legend, is Bryan Beller. Like many professional players, he has more than one oar in the water (or is that pots on the stove?) and his regular contributions to Bass Player Magazine, as well as his session and touring work, keep his name at the forefront of any serious discussion about the bass, bassists, and bass playing. The introduction is from his website, followed by his TR interview. Enjoy! Ed.

"Brain maintained a frenetic, multi-faceted career as a bassist, composer, writer and clinician for nearly twenty years. On his own, Beller released his debut solo album, the jazz/rock-flavored View, in late 2003 to ...

    Nate Watts

Our featured bass legend this month is Nate Watts who, as Stevie Wonder's bass man for over thirty years, has been on the cutting edge of soul, blues, funk, and pop. Thunder Row is pleased to present the following interview, as well as this introduction from our friends at Bass Player Magazine:

"Born in Detroit on March 25, 1954, Nathan Lamar Watts was raised an only child on the city’s gritty west side. Inspired by jazz great Lee Morgan, he took up trumpet in elementary school, forming a trio with friends and fellow future session stars Ollie Brown on drums and Ray Parker Jr. on clarinet.

When he wasn’t in school, Nathan would stroll over to Motown’s Hitsville Studios to watch through the basement window as the Funk Brothers worked their magic. Another passion was the rock & roll of Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, Rare Earth, Mahogany Rush, and Steppenwolf, many of ...

    Paul McCartney

Nobody seems to be telling this guy he's 68! Still packing stadiums around the world, Paul McCartney carries the burdens and blessings of a mighty weighty musical pedigree - one upon which he could rest in ease for the rest of his life, if he so chose. Apparently he chooses, not. While his concerts embody a hefty dose of his unique musical heritage, they also showcase his almost supernatural ability to turn out music ranging from burdock- in-the-brain ditties to musically and lyrically profound glimpses of ...

John Symon Asher "Jack" Bruce (born 14 May 1943) is a Scottish musician, composer and singer. He is best-known as an electric bass guitarist, harmonica player and pianist, and was most famous as a vocalist and the bass guitarist for the 1960s rock band Cream. He lives in Suffolk. England. Hailed as one of the greatest and most skilled bassists of all time, his improvisational skill and utterly unique, free-spirited approach to composition and performance would forever change electric music. His pioneering, full-toned, free-wheeling playing on the electric bass revolutionised the way the instrument is used and influenced the playing of countless bassists to today, including Sting and Jaco Pastorius. ...

    Jaco Pastorius

John Francis Anthony "Jaco" Pastorius III (December 1, 1951 – September 21, 1987) was an American jazz musician and composer widely acknowledged for his skills as an electric bass player. His playing style was noteworthy for containing intricate solos in the higher register. His innovations also included the use of harmonics and the "singing" quality of his melodies on fretless bass. Pastorius suffered from mental illness and substance abuse, and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1982. He died in 1987 at age 35 following a violent altercation at a Fort Lauderdale drinking establishment.
Jaco was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame in 1988, one of only four bassists to be so honored (and the only electric ...
