  • Fretting About Frets

Medium frets? Medium Jumbo frets? What does it mean when they tell you the bass comes with medium or jumbo frets?

I found a couple of graphics online that explain the differences. Playability, of course, is your own personal thing, but these graphics will give you a good idea of what to expect.

The Carvin one was found on the Carvin website; the other was seen in several places, so I don't know who owns it.

Click on the pix to embiggen them. The bottom one can be clicked twice for full size.

Thanks for the info Elmeaux. This is something I have been aware of for quite some time but never really noticed any differences between my basses. Thing is, most of my basses are Fender and, I believe, have Jumbo Frets. Just recently I was playing my Lakland Skyline 44-01 and it struck me that the frets seemed smaller. I've had this bass for a couple years now and somehow never really noticed! I compared it to my P Bass and sure enough, they are smaller. I assume they are Medium Jumbo.

    I am a Bassist

    I am a Bassist.

When I first picked up a bass, it was love at first thump. That poor bass - a copy of a rip-off of a re-make of a Fender, played through an Ampeg guitar amp - was to me the ultimate instrument.Read More Read More
