Looks like he's using his Joe Zon VB4 headless electric bass and an NXT CR electric cello.
The Steinberger CR range is the more expensive level of instrument with active electronics and more tone controls. I play a Steinberger NXT5 upright bass. The CR version is almost 2x the cost of my NXT EUB.
Hey, identically-dressed triplets! All right-handed. All-bass players. Their parents must be so proud! (heh-heh). I liked the sounds and appreciate his ability. The music was a bit repetitious for me but I appreciate the skill that went into making it. I'd love to get my hands on one of those basses!
Yeh, very different tone from the light strings. I would think that they would be best suited to solo work like he is doing. Might tend to get lost in a band situation.
I like his reference to a bit more growl with lighter strings on the lower notes. Maybe I'll have to try that some time.
Have been working on the growl on my fretless and I think it is starting to come together well. I'm using some compression to flatten the attack a bit but it extends the sustain in a very nice way. Using mostly the bridge pickup and playing down near the bridge gives it a bit more percussive attack.
I get a really growly sound from the bridge PU on my JTK, too. On the Soundgear, there's only one PU, so you just play near the bridge to get that aggravated sound.
