One month to FBBC and I have all the supplied songs NAILED. Well, maybe not all of the songs but at least three of them. And maybe not exactly nailed, but at least mostly memorized. Okay, okay, I admit it - I can play one of the songs at performance speed and a couple of others at about 70% to 80% performance speed (as provided on the accompanying MP3s). Hopefully I can get at least one other song up to speed in the next month.

To Stanton, and anyone else flying in, I have seen baggage being loaded into and unloaded from an airplane. I highly recommend that you put your bass in a good HARD CASE rather than a gig bag. I would even consider adding extra padding inside to ensure that the base cannot move around in the case. When I think about putting a bass on a plane I keep remembering that old Samsonite/gorilla commercial. Heck, I'm bringing my good bass in a hard case and I'm DRIVING.

One month to go. Can't wait!

I'm right there's with you DaveB, 1 song down, hope to get at least one more down in the next month. I've decided my Jazz bass will be making the trip with me, but am still on the fence on how to best transport it. I do have a decent hard case but it doesn't have the TSA locks, if that matters. Was thinking to take my chances and try to get it on board in a sturdy gig bag, but if it gets checked I'm screwed. I'd love to hear anyone else's thoughts on this.

I have heard from some folks that some airlines will allow a "normal" guitar case on the plane with you. If you had a short scale bass, (30" neck) that will fit into a "normal" guitar case, you might be able to take with you on the plane (put it in the overhead bin) but, since most of us play 32, 34, 35" scale basses, they will have to be checked - hence the warning about securing your precious instrument as well as possible!. A bass in a gig bag will NOT survive a trip through the "luggage handling process" in the airline business unscathed!!!

Maybe you could drop by the hotel for lunch one day. It looks like we are scheduled for lunch 12:30 to 1:30 each day. Would be happy to meet you then. You might want to check with Barbara (barbara@thelearningdock.com) just to make sure that it's okay.

I might be tempted to ship it directly (via UPS or FedEx) to the hotel. That way you can pack it up good in the hard case and not have to worry about TSA locks. I'm sure that the hotel handles things like this (guitars, golf clubs, etc.) all the time. And it may even be cheaper than checking it on the airline.

If you have a large (hard-sided, I would think) suitcase (like Sampsonite or something) and a bolt-on neck you could take the bass apart and pack and pad it in the suitcase. I understand that this is done quite often by traveling musicians to save on baggage fees.

We are flying from Calgary to Nashville. No, you cannot take it as carry on, I tried that and the lady said "You must be kidding". I told her Leona Boyd takes hers in the cabin - she said I am not Leona Boyd. Do not lock your case, they will break the locks and pry it open. Also, not a bad idea to loosen the strings about a turn, can get a little cold in storage at 35,000 feet. If it is an extra item over and above your normal luggage the fee is usually around $25. Can't ship it that cheap any other method. Yes, they are very gentle with your bass (ya, right). I put a couple of pieces of foam padding on mine before I close up the case, just to keep it from bouncing around. One over the neck near the middle and another at the bridge. Gently hold them in place with a bit of painters tape (doesn't leave residue like other tape). Why hold in place?, because when they open the case the foam will move and they certainly won't make an effort put it back exactly as they found it. The clerk did put "Fragile" stickers on mine, simply means they don't throw it quite as far during loading. Good luck, should mention they lost mine last time, but got it next day.

One more quick thought - locking a bass case seems to me to be an exercise in futility. I cannot imagine some one opening your case, taking out the base, and then leaving the case behind.

LineSix - We'd be more than happy to see you. As the week days are pretty much packed with instruction and/or rehearsal from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., I suggest you join us either Sunday night at the Rutledge Meet-and-Greet concert, or Thursday night's Student Showcase, also at the Rutledge. You're most welcome to either of these (as are any other TMBGers who happen to be in the area.) There's no charge in either case, but drinks are on you!

      Hope to see you there!

Hey, Line6. We look forward to seeing you at the Rutledge. If you have any friends in Nashville, bring 'em along. No cover charge. By the way, a reliable source informs me there are going to be some very special guests showing up. Time will tell. (I won't!) DaveB's right, things kick of at 7:00. Look for David C. or Barb and identify yourself.
