  • Day Late And A Dollar Short

Happy belated birthday to a couple of stellar bassists!

Geezer Butler, who turned 64 on the 27th (now he's REALLY a geezer!)

Terence Michael Joseph "Geezer" Butler (born 17 July 1949 in Birmingham, England) is an English musician and songwriter. Butler is best known as the bassist and primary lyricist of heavy metal band Black Sabbath. He was also involved in Heaven & Hell from 2006 to 2010.

Butler received the nickname "Geezer" at approximately age eight, because "I used to call everybody Geezer" at school. "It was just a slang term for a man. You know, like in America you say 'guy'. In England, the term for that is either 'bloke' or 'geezer'. I used to call everybody else geezer and then eventually everybody started calling me geezer."

Butler grew up in an Irish Catholic family and was heavily influenced by the writing of Aleister Crowley as a teenager. Butler formed his first band, Rare Breed, with old friend John "Ozzy" Osbourne in the autumn of 1967. Butler dated a girl who lived near Tony Iommi, and the guitarist's earliest memories of Butler involved seeing him walking past his house in Birmingham quite often to visit her. Later, Iommi and Butler became acquainted when their bands played at a nearby nightclub.[2] Separated for a time, Osbourne and Butler reunited in the blues foursome, Polka Tulk, along with guitarist Iommi and drummer Bill Ward. They renamed their band Earth, but after finding a band in the small-time English circuit with the same name, soon adopted Black Sabbath in early 1969.

And a Happy Birthday to Abraham Laboriel, who turned 66 on the 17th!

Abraham Laboriel, Sr. (born July 17, 1947) is a Mexican bassist of Garifuna descent who has played on over 4,000 recordings and soundtracks. Guitar Player Magazine described him as "the most widely used session bassist of our time". Laboriel is the father of drummer Abe Laboriel Jr. and of producer, songwriter, and film composer Mateo Laboriel.

Laboriel was born in Mexico City, Afro-Mexican descent. Originally a classically trained guitarist, he switched to bass guitar while studying at the Berklee School of Music. Henry Mancini encouraged Laboriel to move to Los Angeles, California and pursue a recording career. Since then, he has worked with artists as diverse as Andraé Crouch, Donald Fagen, Lee Ritenour, Christopher Cross, Larry Carlton, Alan Silvestri, Dave Grusin, Andy Pratt, Stevie Wonder, Freddie Hubbard, Hanson, Barbra Streisand, Al Jarreau, Billy Cobham, Djavan, Dolly Parton, Elton John, Ray Charles, Madonna, Paul Simon, Keith Green, Carlos Skinfill, Alvaro Lopez and Res-Q Band, Lisa Loeb, Quincy Jones, Leo Sayer, Russ Taff, Engelbert Humperdinck, Andy Summers, Umberto Tozzi, Ron Kenoly, Don Moen, Alvin Slaughter, Johnny Hallyday, Crystal Lewis, Lalo Schifrin, Herbie Hancock, Chris Isaak, Paul Jackson Jr., and Michael Jackson.

When Laboriel recorded his three solo albums (Dear Friends, Guidum, and Justo & Abraham), he recruited a cast of musicians that included Alex Acuña, Al Jarreau, Jim Keltner, Phillip Bailey, Ron Kenoly, and others. His son Abe Laboriel Jr. performed drums.

Laboriel was a founding member of the bands Friendship and Koinonia. He plays live regularly with Greg Mathieson, drummer Bill Maxwell, and Justo Almario. Laboriel is now in the band Open Hands with Justo Almario, Greg Mathieson, and Bill Maxwell.

In 2005, Abraham was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music by the Berklee College of Music.

Happy B-Day Geezer & Abraham! The first song I ever learned on bass was Black Sabbath's Paranoid and to this day Geezer is still my favorite bassist!
