  • Speaking Of Floating Thumbs

We've been having some discussion lately about the floating thumb technique. I found a couple of videos illustrating the use of each style. The basses are totally different, but the musical genre is Classical in both instances.

First, check out John Patitucci, who does not use the floating thumb technique. I realise he's using a six-string bass, but the style is interesting.

Then check out Jacques Bono with his floating thumb technique. 4-string bass, all basic and fundamental.

    What do you think?

Interesting. I use much the same technique on my 6 string as Jacques, in that I put the tip of my thumb on the E string and then mute the B string with the edge of my thumb. Can even get the A string as well if I'm playing on the upper couple of strings.

Seems like the lower strings on a 6 string really like to get into some sympathetic vibes with the upper strings, so gotta tame 'em.

Tobiasman: I use the same technique as you for my 5 string. Now, in lesson 8 that I am haaving to try rapid notes about or above the 12th fret, I am finding that when I have to mute the lower 3 strings my plucking fingers are in a bit of an awkward position to get at the G string. Do you find the same, and if so, any suggestions?

Are you changing the position of your plucking hand when your fretting hand moves up?

The only time I encounter some positional issues is if I'm plucking right up close to the bridge, otherwise I don't see much difference based on where I am fretting.

What are the challenges you are running into?
