  • Cleaning Speaker Cones

Soooo, a week or so ago, I opened up my Rumble amp in order to clean dust and debris from the cone. It's a 12 incher - I didn't take any pix, but it was a pretty simple process.

I opened the grill from the front to expose the cone, and found it quite dirty. Though I always keep the speaker covered with a cloth, it had still managed to accumulate a lot of debris on the cone.

I didn't use any chemicals, but I did gas the surface gently with compressed air to remove the loose stuff. That got rid of some of the lighter dust, but I also used a clean, relatively soft paint brush to get more of the gunk in the ridges. A nice light touch! Then I used a Q-Tip to get the remainder of the stuff that was too hard to get with the brush.

Once back together, the Rumble sounded noticeably cleaner and less fuzzled than before. When putting the grill back on, it's important to make sure the screws are on tightly - if not, the grill can rattle or buzz when you play.

There are several videos on YouTube that show different techniques for cleaning cones.

Have you cleaned your own cones? What method did you use?

Thanks for the useful info Elmeaux. I have not cleaned any of my amp's speakers yet, but I have employed the same method you used on stereo speakers with good results. I prefer vintage stereo gear myself. In the photo of the Peavy T-40 you can see one of my Marantz HD-880 speakers which are driven by a Marantz 1150 integrated amp. Yeah, I like Marantz.......a lot. Although, I do have some vintage Sansui gear as well.
