After taking some time to go back through all the fantastic albums I reviewed in 2014, I am proud to award the title of Album of the Year to bassist Lane Baldwin for his most recent collection, THE VIEW FROM HERE.
There were many serious contenders this past year, and the music I've had the privilege to review has knocked my socks off in terms of quality, innovation, and creativity, but in the long run, Lane's TVFH demonstrated a level of soul that was second to none. The album reached down into me; it inspired me to look at things from different vantage points. It challenged me to face aspects of my own life.
Lane's own life challenges lay the foundation of the music's soul, and the reality of the tunes is deep and meaningful. Lane has fallen into and crawled out of the gulf more than once, and he has earned his place as a Bluesman, earned the right to create, sing, and play the songs that are The Blues.
Congratulations to Lane Baldwin for The View From Here.
