  • Adam Nitti Is Not Of This World

    Album Review
Adam Nitti - Not Of This World
    Genre - Progressive Jazz

Adam Nitti’s latest album, Not Of This World, is an intense mix of meaningful tunes that have the ability to reach many soft spots in the listener’s heart. One look at the album cover says it all: you’re in for an exciting, expansive experience beyond the world of Jazz as you might expect it to be. From the opening, electrifying surge of “AntiSocialMedia” to the gentle, soothing licks of the closing “I Still Believe”, Nitti has put together a pretty amazing collection, with enough variety in style and presentation to keep us all entertained. It’s exploratory nature and varied motifs prompt me to include it in a mixed genre category I affectionately call “Prog Jazz.” As usual, I recommend the first listen be through headphones. Nothing beats this kind of adventure close-up and delivered directly into your head.

“Antisocialmedia” and the title track, “Not of This World” represent the most vibrant aspects of the album; both thunder with attitude and pack a real interstellar-type punch with an energy level that shoots through the roof! Right away, you know this is Adam Nitti. His skills with the bass keep you glued to your record player (yeah, yeah, I know we’re all listening to this one on our CD or digital players, but record player is a more romantic term, so...).

The second category of moods includes “Roofquake,” “Cosmic Underground,” “Francesca’s Day Out,” and “The Strut.” These are songs with great style, groove, and funk. Not as intense as the previous ones, but filled with a more deliberate mood. Nitti continues to amaze with his bass-lovin’ fingers, and his guest musicians are so good that they ensure he must earn every lick and expression. They challenge him with their groove. Safe to say, he keeps it moving.

The last category is the soft touch. “Oakwood,” and “ I Still Believe.” These are the smoky, slow-dancing numbers, so very rich in their displays of emotion. I think “I Still Believe” is my choice for best song on the album. It could be because it’s the closing song; I always revere the last song of a collection that has moved me. It’s the resolution and the rest. It’s the cigarette in the dark when it’s all over - heh.

This one’s going to be a big feather in Nitti’s cap; musicianship merged with deep feeling and creativity. Listening to him bass-out on this project leaves me feeling in awe of his skills. He plays what I cannot with a touch I will never have, so I just smile and let him be my voice.

Featuring: Kirk Covington, Derico Watson, Keith Carlock, Sonny Emory, and Jason Palmer on drums, Tom Hemby, Shane Theriot, Gerald Gradwohl, and Scott Bernard on Guitars, Chris Carver and Mike Whittaker on keyboards, and Mark Douthit on that amazing sax! True talents, one and all.
