  • Convert Fretted Bass to Fretless

Jason, a very talented technician, formerly from the Musician's Den in Evansville Indiana, takes you step-by-step through the process of converting your standard fretted bass to fretless. Excellent information presented so even I could follow it! I strongly recommend you log on to Jason's YouTube channel and subscribe to his series.

As always, TR has no financial stake in this video instruction which we present at the courtesy of the Musician's Den.

    Enjoy!

Yummy. I watched the first three. Even if you never do this, it's good info to see how the ax is put together.

Very, very interesting. The more you know about the instrument you play the better. Thanks!!!

On my Line6, 5 String bass, there is a setting that is suppose to be recorded, not sampled from Jaco's original Fretless bass that he did this too. Can't remember what it sounded like, but just might try it at church service and record it and see what it sounds like. Then try to get it up here.

TO ED!!!!!!! When are we going to get around here an easy way to get mp3 files up here???????? I can get around it by making a dvd video with the sound, but it's a slight pain in the BUT!!!!!!!

Then everyone can show how bad their getting or how good their getting. Also how our different amps, basses etc sound!!
Time to help on this matter, if their is a deeper reason for not having it let us know, we can handle it!!!

Or, am I missing something here and there is a way of uploading mp3's. Thanks

      Interesting.

Here's an article I did on the same topic (fretless conversion.)

Part II was more about the body refinishing:

Oh very cool! I don't know that I am adventurous enough to attempt such a project but who knows? And regardless, great information about guitar fabrication - so many things I hadn't considered at all (e.g. Neck wear, radius...). Maybe one day. And maybe I'll ask at the local shops if they can do this for me (I happen to have a second bass that might serve). And I DO want a fretless some day.

That is an excellent resource! Even if you already have a fretless bass, there is a lot of insight there on how to improve your fretless neck and playability.

Stewart Mac is a great source of some of the specialized tools used for working on guitars/basses and he uses some of their stuff. I have some as well and while you can probably make due with other tools for less cost, the price you pay for their stuff gets you quality tools that do the job. (I'm not affiliated with Stew Mac in any way, just a satisfied customer )
