  • Know Your Music - Consonance And Dissonance

This time, our video will take a look at the consonance and dissonance of chords. We all know when we're listening to an angry or troubled sound that is looking for a resolution. The penultimate sound that comes just before the calming final chord. From dissonance to consonance. If you're at all into composing music, you'll get a feel for how dissonance adds deep emotion to your sound, and how consonance eases you toward the resolution. I love this video. I HAVE composed music that uses this principle. I have to admit I never knew what it was called when using it; all I knew was that this disturbance-to-calm was exactly the emotion I was looking for.

It's a two part lesson. I hope you enjoy it!

      Cool.

We have a number of songs that we end in a way that leaves listeners wanting the chord/note to be resolved (release the tension). Not too many, as it can be a bit "kitchy" if overdone, but it can really get the audience's attention if you leave it unresolved.

Yeah, too much of a good thing becomes boring. Using musical tools to create mood should be both clever and varied.

Any video samples or mp3s of your work?
