The use of the Fermata gives the orchestra, singers, or any other type of musical performer the expressive ability to extend a note well beyond the intended length, or clip it short and hold a timed silence to add feeling to a passage. The fermata is indicated on your sheet music like this:
From a music theory standpoint, watch this Skype instructor demonstrate the fermata on the written page.
There is so much leeway in what the musiccian does with the fermata; it can be held for many seconds or clipped to allow the singer to take a breath while an extended silence continues.
Watch this video of a choir conductor as she demonstrates how to lead her vocalists through the two types of fermatas.
And finally, listen to this fellah who has layered his voice over itself in the hymn How Great Thou Art. Notice how he breaks the traditional tempo to allow selected notes to ring for a longer time than we normally hear. He is using very well placed fermatas to add expression to his presentation. Love it!
