  • New From Esperanza Spalding

Esperanza's new album, Emily's D+Evolution is now available!

Caught her on Stephen Colbert last week, and I'm about to see her on Bill Maher. I haven't checked out the album yet, but FBPO has a nice little feature.

Has anybody here checked out the album yet?

Esperanza is also featured on the cover of next month's Bass Player Magazine, which has an extensive review of the album - which showcases Esperanza's amazing electric bass chops. No jazz or upright on this package.

I ordered Esperanza's new Cd as soon as I received my copy of Bass Player and saw her on the cover. While it is definitely somewhat different from her prior albums, it is still Esperanza, so it is, as expected, AWESOME! Wonderful vocals and awesome bass playing. Who could ask for more? It may well replace her incredible, Radio Music Society, as my favorite Esperanza CD.

P.S. As I was writing this I received my copy of Alberto Rigoni's latest CD, BASSORAMA, via air mail from Italy!!! Suddenly Monday seems more tolerable.

First off, we all have our individual tastes in music, and I am very fond of what I would call modern European music. Many modern Euro bands combine varied styles of music into their compositions. A partial list of these styles would include jazz, pop, rock, blues, swing, techno, and even American country. You can also hear the influence of more classical European, Eastern European, Middle Eastern, Latin, African, etc. I think the Europeans are well ahead of North Americans in the musical evolutionary process. But, that's just my opinion.......and we all have one of those. A short list of the European bands I listen to regularly, and the albums I listen to most would include:

      Candy Dulfer - Funked Up!
      Hattler - Bass Cuts
      Tape Five - Goodnight Josephine
      Pilot Jazou - Wonderful Morning
Akimbo - On Top (a one time project of The New Heavies - very hard to find)
Ana Popovic - Can You Stand the Heat
Demi Cat - Pin Me Up (fun for your ears!)

That should shed a bit of light on my musical perspective. I should also add that while I appreciate the role of a bass player in a band, I prefer to play melodies on my bass (currently learning Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz), as opposed to bass lines. I think the bass is underappreciated as a melodic instrument, but that seems to be changing thanks to the efforts of musicians like Alberto Rigoni. As for my opinion of Mr. Rigoni's latest effort Bassorama? I think it is quite amazing! It is mostly instrumental, which I like, and has some very impressive bass playing. In fact, I would call it bass playing with attitude! To me, the music ranges from cheerfully playful to darkly moody, and pretty much everything in-between. So, use this link to Bandcamp and order BASSORAMA! And while you're there order the rest of Alberto's albums.........they are all great and he has a screaming deal on his full discography in digital format.

Thanks, kimgee! Alberto's work with bass melodies is one of the things I love about his music.
