For those of you getting ready to start Lesson 3 of the TeachMeBassGuitar course, you are about to get into the world of using a pick to play your bass. Roy demonstrates pick technique, talks about the difference in sound between playing with a pick versus playing with your fingers, and offers pointers on choosing a pick that's right for you. Then there are some practice routines to get the feel for using a pick.
No everybody will take to the feel of using a pick, or the sound it makes, but keep this in mind: McCartney plays with a pick, as do these other bassists (either all the time, or as part of their routines):
Carol Kaye
Rick Danko
Roger Waters
John Paul Jones
Sting
Bill Wyman
John Deacon
John Entwistle (now deceased)
Jack Bruce (now deceased)
Chris Squire (now deceased)
Using a pick will be your choice, but if you spend some time using one for the lesson, you'll be able to widen the horizons of your playing!
On that note, Ralph and the staff at the TMBG Interplanetary Headquarters have been hard at work, and have come up with this great One-Sheet on the topic as discussed on the course video of Lesson 3.
