  • SONGVIEWS - Dave & Ansel Collins - Double Barrel

Okay, when I first heard this song, it caught my ear, not just because of the beastly bass, but also because it came from a genre of which I had little exposure: Reggae.

It didn't take me long to get the groove of this type of music, and I sought it out more and more every day after this number. I knew not the technicalities nor the history of Reggae, but I always recognised the music when I heard it.

Often enough, I wouldn't know the originals, but rather the 70s pop radio versions, and it wasn't until I got older that I came to understand that the music I liked had its roots in a culture developed LONG before the 70s. I knew the Johnny Nash version of STIR IT UP, the Eric Clapton version of I SHOT THE SHERIFF - but then again, I also knew Bob & Marcia's YOUNG GIFTED AND BLACK.

With DOUBLE BARREL, there were two draws: the bass, and the lyrics. I'm still not 100% sure the online lists of the lyrics are entirely correct. Most sites say "I AM DOUBLE U, O, O, O." I always thought of it as "I AM W, O, O, O," but this could just be a spelling thing. I thought it had something to do with the Wizard of Oz.

Anyway, if anybody can give me some clarity on the words, I'd be happy! HA! After some 47 years, it would be nice to put this one to bed.

P.S. Yes, I have the 45 of DOUBLE BARREL; I always bought the ones I loved! Oh, and one more thing, the B-Side was an alternate version of the same song. Except for the opening salvo of lyrics, it was a nice instrumental version.

    Love it!
