  • A Bass Re-Acquaintance

Just to give you folks an update on my health situation, as well as my bass situation. As most of y'all know, I am in the midst of a problem called hyperparathyroidism, as well as some of the associated side effects, including hypercalcemia, atrial fibrillation, among a whack of other things.

I am going to be having surgery to fix the parathyroid glands sometime in the first few months of 2018 (maybe end of February), but in the meantime, I have almost NO energy whatsoever. I am sleeping ten hours a day, sometimes much more. When I am awake, it's hard to STAY awake, my mind is a thick fog most of the time, and I'm on heart medicine to keep me from having a stroke.

What does all this have to do with the bass, you might ask. I picked up my bass for the first time in over a year this morning, and I wanted to say that it was wonderful. I am shaky, I have no rhythm, and I pretty much forgot how to play any of the songs that used to come so naturally to me. I am in great pain from the effort, and my hands are shaking almost uncontrollably.

But, you want to know something? It was fun. It was more fun than I've had in a very long time. As it always has, the bass makes me smile. I practiced a few Christmas songs and became calm and relaxed - for the half hour or so that I played, I felt WELL again.

Music has the power to heal; I'm very sure of it. I have a couple of albums sent to me from musicians, and I'm starting to feel motivated to write them reviews!

When my surgery is done, and I get my life back, I want to make Thunder Row come alive again, as alive as I know I will feel!!

If you are depressed, or getting your winter blues, or even if you're battling the flu or some other health problem, you need music in your life to feed your soul, and re-ignite that spark. Pick up your bass, throw in one of your TeachMeBassGuitar discs, and REMEMBER why you're so fond of the bass.

This isn't a commercial for the course - it's just about how I've been feeling and what my basses are doing for me. I don't know why I let a YEAR go by without remembering how they make me feel.

I'm off to rest now (I'm using voice recognition software instead of typing), but I hope I'll be ready for some more tomorrow! The thunder lives!!

Wow Elmeaux, you've been hit hard and not out of the tough stuff yet! Do hope things get straightened out in the new year. Prayers for your full recovery.

I can echo your thoughts on playing the bass. I've had serious health issues this last year. Diagnosed with lower colon cancer in June. Went through chemo and radiation therapy in August and September. Then surgery in late November from which I am still recovering. All signs to date are that the chemo/radiation got it all!!! Still have a few months of chemo to finish things off. Managed to play my basses right up to my surgery. Playing with the band really helped to take my mind off what was going on. Can only play my old P bass right now because I'm not supposed to lift anything over 10 lbs. Maybe after Christmas I can pick up the other ones and get back to the band.

Love your attitude, lady, and really pulling for you!

Ashley and the Gnomes in the Art Department told me to tell you guys to get well! (I don't think it was a request, if you know what I mean).

Elmeaux, it's not the same around the old place without you singing up and down the halls! I'm glad to hear you were able to pick up the bass again - even if it took effort - and that you found the music healing. It is that. I look forward to hearing that your treatments all went well, and that you'll soon be giving Ralph a hard time. (He's determined to take over your corner office on the 99th floor! Hurry back!). You're not only LOVED, you're NEEDED! God bless your Christmas and your new year.

Tobiasman, having lived through this with a number of friends and relations, we know the strength, courage, and grace your journey has taken. Well done. We pray that your recovery will be complete, and you'll be back at full strength very soon! All the best. God bless you and yours throughout the new year.
