  • Squier Bronco - Great Starter for 10-14 Year-Olds

In response to the many queries we've had about basses for young players, we offer this user review from essjaydee at Review Stream (www.reviewstream.com), in the expectation that those of you with young bassists or would-be bassists will find it helpful.

    Squire Brono Bass Guitar

"This bass was bought when my friends young son got interested in playing bass. After watching him struggle with my spare full size bass we decided to look for a short scale bass to make it easier for him.

"After a few weeks searching for a decent second-hand or a reasonable priced new bass we eventually decided to buy a Squier Bronco. This bass was bought on Ebay for £60 from a seller in our hometown which meant we could check it over before buying it. These basses cost around £160 in the shops but there are plenty on Ebay for around £50 - £75 depending on the condition.

"The Squier is a 3/4 size bass with a 30 inch scale this makes it a lot easier for kids or anyone with smaller hands to play but it would also be great for guitarists who only play bass occasionally as it’s more or less the same size as an electric guitar which makes swapping between them easier.

"I was pleasantly surprised when I played this bass it sounds pretty good for an entry level bass it stays in tune and is very easy to play. The previous owner was a bass player who had used it to teach his son so he had set the bass up perfectly with decent strings and low action and made sure his son looked after it so it was in perfect condition when we got it.

"The Squier is a beginner-level bass; the single pick up, bridge and hardware are pretty basic but are good enough for anyone starting out. The instrument is well-finished which surprised me as I had heard various views on Squiers quality.

"The Bronco looks a lot like Fenders Mustang or Musicmaster short scale basses which adds kudos and best of all it doesn’t look or play like a toy. The body of this is made from Agathis and finished in black (red version shown) with a white pickguard. the maple neck has 19 frets and is slim and easy to play especially for smaller hands.

"This bass is probably only ever used as a stepping stone to something else or played for a bit before the owner loses interest so there are plenty around 2nd hand. It would be an excellent bass for upgrading if you like shortscales after playing this one I’m very tempted to buy a 2nd hand Bronco and upgrade the pickups and bridge.

"If you are considering buying one of these it’s a great choice starting your kid or any learner out on something that looks great and plays well will be a great starting point for moving on to a full scale bass or a better shortscale bass later on."

      Baby beauty!!

Think of how funny she'd look in the hands of a tall man like Roger Waters. He'd say, "...but I don't play the ukelele..."
