  • Beginning Bass 10: Free Form Funk - Slap in Action

For this lesson, I've taken the Left and Right Hand exercises from the last two lessons and created a bass line that I might use in a real life gigging situation. Notice that there is a lot of repetition in the idea. Measures 1, 3, 5 and 7 we can refer to as the A idea and 2, 4, 6 and 8 are the B idea.

Notice that I've created an idea that uses ABABABAB as a question/answer. One of the central ideas of this type of line is that the A idea is not particularly busy, so that the B part of the line appears busier than it really is. It's all a matter of perspective.

I'd recommend learning each bar individually, and then putting them together very slowly with a metronome or one of the earlier drum loops from another column. Then, try playing them a little faster until you reach quarter note=95 bpm which is the tempo of the backing track included with this lesson. Have fun!

    Peace and Low Notes,
    Roy C. Vogt
