Anybody who knows me will testify that I occasionally like to play my bass with a bow. It's a one-off, specialty sound at best, since not many songs refer to the bass parts as "Hammer On," "Pull Off," and "Bow Through a Delay/Echo Chamber."
Playing with a bow is pretty much a sound effect - not a bass line. But there's a little gadet on the market that (for me) could bring this sound into the spotlight it so richly deserves.
As the electric guitar has evolved from something simply strummed or picked into an ocean of effects and styles, so the bass can now have some of this airtime as well.
Don't get me wrong - the bass as a clean, driving sound is still the BEST way to make thunder, but if you are like me, and have an experimental streak in you, you'll be BOWED over by this device.
Meet the EBow, an electronic bow for stringed instruments.
From their website:
The EBow is a hand-held electronic bow for guitar. This small battery-powered unit replaces the pick in the right hand letting the guitarist mimic strings, horns, and woodwinds with unbelievable sensitivity. The EBow produces a powerful infinite sustain, rich in harmonics for incredible guitar sounds. Unlike plug-in effects, the Energy Bow does its work on the string itself... Direct String Synthesis™. Infinite Sustain is just the beginning.
Look at this video and then have a look at their website - they have many demonstrations of its use - they even offer lessons!!
