  • Beginning Bass 19: Timing Studies

One of the most fundamental - and the most neglected aspects! - of bass playing is timing and "pocket". It's just not as glamorous as hyper-slapped 16ths, 2-handed tapping or the latest technique of the month. However, it's more important than all of those things. If the bass player is the heart of the band, then a bass player with funny time makes the band feel like a person with a heart condition -- Not Good!

I've written a set of mixed rhythms in quarters, eighths, triplets, and sixteenth notes. Sometimes you're not playing the downbeat but have to wait for the upbeats. Go back to the lesson on the foot tap system if you need a refresher. I've given you the exercises in tempos of 80 and 100 bpm. Don't just play single notes; practice scales, chord arpeggios and whatever else you like with these rhythmic variations. Stay tuned!

It takes time to study time to get the time studies in time for the forum, but from time to time they get messed up.

From time-to-time there is a timely time for every season under heaven, a time to be born, a time to die, a time to sow, a time to reap, a time to do time studies in a timely fashion, but who has time? For that matter, what is time but a fiction by which we attempt to measure the immeasureable, a planetary indentation in the tenuous fabric of space, somewhere at the intersection of infinity and childhood.

And if you want to go further in the study of time, take a look at the Scientific American issue from last winter which is devoted to the subject. It raises the possiblilty that time may not exist.
