  • ANTHONY WELLINGTON: "Memorization: Age, Bass, and Baggage"

Anthony Wellington is, like our own Roy Vogt, an exceptional educator as well as an exceptional player; proof of which is the fact that he's Victor Wooten's bassist. Did you hear that? He's Victor Wooten's bassist! Not bad creds. We caught him at a musicdojo (www.musicdojo.com) workshop near Nashville a while ago and here's what he had to say about the challenges of learning later in life . . .

    Anthony Wellington at musicdojo

In the weeks to come, Anthony's going to have a word or two to say about music theory -which applies equally to all instruments. Meantime, if you're looking for a foundation in theory, check out his website: http://www.bassology.net/

If you like this check out victor wooden Groove Workshop DVD. I have only seen the clips but Anthony Wellington really shines as a teacher.

As an adult learner, with lots of "adult baggage", it was refreshing to hear Anthony break down music concepts into something simple. I had the priviledge of attending that clinic (one of those loud voices in the background was me...my apoligies) and Anthony taught me more about music in three hours than I've learned in a year.

As with Roy, it is always great to hear things put into simple terms. Sometimes, as another older learner, it seems so overwhelming to take in all the different terms.

I often think sometimes you have to know all or not play, and Anthony shows you can have understanding at different levels as you progress as far as you want to progress.

I can't wait to watch more of his video's on youtube when I get a chance.

Victor's book is also an interesting take on learning if you haven't read it, it is worth the read.

Mr. Wellington delivered an "Eureka" moment for me. Ive been practicing the seven modes and wondering how to apply them. If you group them properly by chord tones (7th. arpeggios) they distill down to a Major 7, a Minor 7, a Dominant 7, and a Half Diminished 7...just as described in the video. I've also been confused about learning scales vs. chord tones ever since watching the lesson by Carol Kaye...and he cleared that up. I love it when it all comes together. TMBG...thanks for the supplimentary lessons.

      Thanks a bunch.

Good teachers make things that seem complex understandable.

Anthony did that in spades in just a few moments!
