  • This Is Why We Have Weekends

Speaking of bringing old faves up to the forefront again, indulge me a moment...

PS...this is an open invitation to all of my Row-mates...take a standard Christmas song and write new lyrics to it...bass related.

This wasn't a Christmas song...but just something I whipped up earlier this year...but you get the idea.

(Sung to the tune of "You Are My Sunshine")

    CHORUS

You are my thunder, my booming thunder
You make the ground shake most every day
The people know that when I am playing
No one can take my thunder away

    VERSE 1

The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamt I had no bass guitar
When I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
My axe was right there by the bar!

    (shout WHEW!)

    (CHORUS)

    VERSE 2

I'll always love you - you make me happy
You give me chills all down my spine
If I would lose you, I’d be forsaken
You sound the thunder, oh so fine!

    (shout YEAH!)

    (CHORUS)

There is no other - can do what you do
Make people dance and shake their cans
You’re are the power, the heavens’ thunder
A billion people as your fans!!

    (shout WOW!)

    (CHORUS)

    ONE MORE TIME!!

You are my thunder, my booming thunder
You make the ground shake most every day
The people know that when I am playing
No one can take my thunder away!

No one can take my thunder awaaaaaaaay!!!!

    - thank you for your kind attention -

Excellent! But now I won't sleep tonight due to this song in my head. Got tabs?

IIRC, it's just kind of a simple I-IV-V thing in whatever key fits your voice.

This is great! It will have to be the new Thunder Row theme song.

Sir, you have taught me a lesson that i was always curious about, and that my friend is,
i always asked myself, how is it that a singer can get with a band, and who and how is it that the lyrics are placed where you hear them in the song, and right there you say, Wow, that's a great song! What if we put different music to it and etc...
bottom line is, I sang that song in my head, without a clue to the harmony, ( i don't know many songs from Rock, Pop or anyother genre, but i sang it completly, and would love the notation and tab to it, i am not at your level where i can write this out, but I Promise you i will get there. Now Salsa, i know about, heck i am from Puerto Rico, but i saw in my mind first hand, how that may work.
So, thank you for this valuable lesson/information.

      Hey, Edward,

My version is just a funny take on an old standard called "You Are My Sunshine." There are versions of it everywhere on the internet.

I normally play it in D, but I do enjoy this version by Boxcar Willie.

He plays it in E...so your three notes are E A B

For our purposes (the funny version) the three notes would be played like this...

You are my (E) thunder, my booming thunder

You make the (A) ground shake most every (E) day

The people (A) know that when I am (E) playing

No one can (B) take my thunder a (E) way

      7th fret on the A string = E
      7th fret on the D string = A
      9th fret on the D string = B

It's the L shape on the fretboard.

No matter what key you play it in, it's the same pattern on the fretboard.

Add some fills to round it out.

i looked it up in the net yesterday and found this guy and three ladies from 1940 singing it, in my mind i put bass music to it, brother it was a new high for me, i was actually placing note by note in my mind and mouth, now trying to put those notes on paper, ahhh, that's another twenty dollars, ( i mean that's another story when i say that's another 20 dollars). But thank you for the lesson.

      Hello Elmeaux
just tried the playalong and had fun trying to figure what to play besides E-A-B and came up with a few ideas, thanks again, i'v reached lesson 6 and was getting the shuffle together with Roy and then without Roy, it felt like a work out, but i kept up with him for awhile, i will catch up.
      cheers

I had no idea where you were in the lessons, and did not want to start yapping about things you maybe hadn't studied yet. For that reason, I just spoke in very basic terms...sorry if my reply sounded condescending to your acquired skills.

But I am glad you found your own style in the song!

      It's a great old standard!
