Here's the calendar of events! (Click on the calendar to see the whole week), a complete description of the week's activities, and registration information. Ed. ROY VOGT'S FANTASY BASS BOOT CAMP - DAILY SCHEDULE* *Tentative, subject to change. Sunday, July 29 Check in at the DoubleTree by Hilton in downtown Music City, an easy walk (or courtesy DoubleTree shuttle) from the famous honky-tonks of lower Broadway, the legendary Ryman Auditorium, the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Bridgestone Arena - host to music’s biggest stars. After an afternoon’s sightseeing or relaxing by the pool, you’ll attend the private welcoming dinner where you’ll meet Roy and his lovely wife, DeeDee, and get an overview of the week ahead. Shuttle to and from Nashville's airport is included. Parking at the DoubleTree is not included. Monday, July 30 Your first morning features a full breakfast at your hotel - from your choice of the sumptuous buffet or menu, served from 6:00 to 8:30. Eat hearty, you'll want to be fortified for the day ahead; Roy's first workshop begins at 9:00 sharp. This is where you'll be introduced to the three pieces of music that Roy has written especially for this week. Your assignment: Be ready to play the bass line for one of these songs (beginner, intermediate, or advanced) at Friday's recording session with the TMBG band!* After surrendering to the temptations of the lunch buffet, it's back to work with Roy and his guest instructors until 5:00, when you'll enjoy an hour and a half of rest and relaxation at the pool or bar, a workout in the fitness room or nip up to your room for a nap. You'll want to be well rested for an evening of food and music at Nashville's Hard Rock or Jimmy Buffet Cafe. Tuesday, July 31 We're sure you'll want to try out some of the other selections from the Doubletree's generous breakfast offerings, and you'll need sustenance for the day ahead. Beginning at 9:00, it's time to woodshed the bass line you learned yesterday. We guarantee you'll feel like you've got fourteen fingers - and they're all thumbs! This music is meant to be challenging; Roy and his staff of pro bassists are here to give you solid instruction that, with practice, you can turn in to mastery of the instrument. Lunch break will find you back at the buffet, where you can get to know your fellow bassists a little better, then back to class until free time. (You're going to need it!) We suggest a beer in the bar, a walk down Broadway, a dip in the pool, or shaking out the kinks with a brisk workout in the fitness room. Once you're rested and ready, it'll be time for one of the week's many highlights - a dinner cruise on the General Jackson riverboat from Opryland to the Titans' stadium downtown. This leisurely cruise features a fantastic meal served in lavish, old-world style, accompanied by a stage show that has become legendary and showcases some of Nashville's premiere musical talent - and in Nashville, that's saying something! Wednesday, August 1 There's still an array of breakfast selections you haven't tried. Be bold! In fact, that might be the watchword for the day; be bold! During today's workshops, Roy and his fellow pros will guide you phrase-by-phrase through your part, and show you tips, tricks, and techniques that will help you master the piece in time for Friday's recording session at The Sound Emporium, one of Nashville's most coveted studios - recording home of T-Bone Burnett, Willie Nelson, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, and countless others. You'll still be a long way from exhausting the offerings of the DoubleTree's lunch buffet, but give it a go! This afternoon's session is going to be intense, and if you're fingers aren't tingling at the end of it - well, they will be, so why speculate? In any event, you'll be glad we arranged this evening to be a free night when you, your spouse, and/or fellow bassists can take in the town. We have many suggestions: Gaylord's spectacular Opryland Hotel with its indoor villages, shops, river cruise, and garden walks (transportation provided), the cacophonous honky-tonks of lower Broadway, a concert at the Bridgestone Arena*, the Bluebird Cafe - a hole-in-the wall where the biggest names in country music got their start, or a night at one of the many venues featuring any kind of music your heart desires, by some of tomorrow's brightest stars. Thursday, August 2 Challenge the chef with the omelette of your dreams, or any other breakfast treat you fancy, but be sure to include tea or coffee - a shot of caffeine will help you keep up with today's agenda; after all, this is the last day you have to perfect the phrases and licks you'll need tomorrow in the studio. Don't worry, Roy and his staff will help you work out those last-minute kinks so your part will be as smooth as suede. There'll be plenty of face time with a teacher to help you over the rough spots. Venture into some of the more exotic fare offered up on the buffet, after which you'll be ready to tackle the final Workshop session: "Puttin' on the Polish." Here's where you do your final "pre-flight" run-throughs with Roy and the TMBG Band! Make final adjustments and perfect your own signature style in time for tonight's Bass Showcase at the Rutledge! Take full advantage of your free time (we suggest plenty of rest!), it's going to be a late night with TMBG's Bass Showcase at the Rutledge where, after a catered meal from one of our favorite Mexican restaurants, you get to play your song - on stage - with the TMBG Band! In front of a live audience! Imagine the adrenaline rush of taking your place as bassist with this group of exceptional Nashville studio musicians! (And no, Roy won't be onstage to bail you out!) There'll be professional sound and lighting and YOU are the featured artist. A video of your performance will be included on the DVD that is part of your package**. Friday, August 3 Last night was a thrill and a workout, but today's performance is for the ages. After another mouth-watering breakfast at the DoubleTree, it's off to the Sound Emporium where, after a brief tour of the studio, you'll be introduced to the audio engineers who will be recording your session. Unless you're first up, you'll still have time for some last-minute run-throughs, but we suggest you sit in on the sessions - a rare chance to see the process of creating a recording from the inside. The studio is where music becomes immortal - and where you put into practice all you've learned during the week. Once it's your turn - and you're plugged into the 48-track digital board, the rush will take over and you'll forget the pain in your fingers, or the fact that you struggled with the turn around. When TMBG's Bryon counts down the beat and it's time for you to fall into the pocket, you'll be READY! It's been a long day in the studio, so TLD has booked a great little restaurant in the Nashville's trendy Germantown neighborhood to host our Wrap-Up Party. Roy, his fellow instructors, and the members of the TMBG Band will all be there. Most importantly, you'll be able to celebrate with all the other bassists with whom you've grown so close through this demanding week of Bass Boot Camp; where you've stretched your abilities, acquired new skills, and been introduced to a whole new dimension of your musical potential. Saturday, August 4 The final full breakfast, and a time to say good-bye to Roy, DeeDee, and the TLD staff who have been serving you all week. The DoubleTree will provide transportation to the airport for your journey home. The airline won't apply any surcharges for the weight of memories and bass-playing experience you'll be carrying home!
