    Question Minimizing string noise

Does anyone know of a good exercise to help cut down on the noise of finger drag on round wound strings?

With smallish hands, and a 34 in scale bass, I notice that I have a habit of starting the pivot before the fretting finger is clear of the string. This results in a noticeable scraping sound. This is worst at higher speeds and in the lower frets.

So far I have slowed things down, begun to concentrate on increacing stretch, and lifting before the pivot shift if it is needed. Putting aside switching to flats or tape wounds (my go to strings) are there any other suggestions out there?

    Thanks.

I just use Fast Fret on my strings. I think there's also one called Finger Ease. You just apply it to the strings.

I clean the strings with Bass Brites, then apply Fast Fret.

I don't have an actual exercise, though. Just an application routine.

Unless you prefer to use noise reducer (ie. Fast Fret, etc.) then this is a technique issue. You are approaching it correctly by working on the steps that allow you to fret silently and practising them until they become natural at any speed.

Good technique always works. Noise reducers only work when you have them.
