Thread: Medium Scale Strings

  1. #1

    Default Medium Scale Strings

I just bought an Ibanez AFB200 hollow body bass.

It's a short scale at 30.3", but Ibanez says that medium scale strings are required. However, I am not finding very many choices (of any type) when it comes to medium scale strings. Ideally, I would like to get a good set of flat wounds, but I would accept any advice on strings that people can give me.

Good morning, Noel. I hope all is well with you and yours.
I have an Ibanez AGB 200 semi hollow. I have tried both Daddario flats (chromes) and tape wounds on it. My preference is the tapewounds. They are available in 50-105, and have, to my ears, on the semi hollow, a better tone than the 45-100 chromes.

    Hi, Brian.

Thank you for your concern. Everybody is alive and unhurt after their house was hit by a missile about 10 days ago. Thankfully they had just added a second story to the house about three months earlier and it absorbed most of the damage. Thank God for that.

As for the D'Addario strings, how is the tension on those tape wounds? I really liked the sound of the Pro Steels on my SR1200, but the almost nonexistent tension in them caused me to have very high action, or suffer from terrible fret buzz.

    Good morning, Noel.
    Glad to hear everyone OK.
RE the tensions; the medium scale will always be less than the long scale, as you would expect.
As per the DèAddario sight, PS Long PS medium Tape medium
    41.42 36.78 35.46
    47.12 41.74 34.26
    39.10 34.55 31.48
    33.78 29.92 28.26
The 2 steel sets are 45-100, the tapes are 50-105.

So far, I have not found a difference in action adjustaility between the tapes and the normal nickle wounds that I have tried, and tend to keep a fairly low action

Thanks for the specifics, Brian. Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you. It's been a long week.

The D'Addario strings seem to be very popular on these hollow body basses.

I have D'Addario's on my upright electric. Quite nice on that instrument.

Have you had a look at basstringsonline? They let you sort by string length and then by type. They have quite a few varieties of medium scale flats. I'm really starting to like the Labella Deep Talking Flats.

I pretty much buy all my strings there. Fast delivery!
