Definition 2 from your link would be the one I am most familiar with. Many of the contextual examples given are usages of the word that I have never experienced. A more realistic example would be the following quote from a person roused by a commotion:
"Hey guys, what's all the ballyhoo about?"
That's the most common manner in which I have seen the word used. I have seen the word used as it is used in the article above, but not very often. Also, it is not used in spoken conversation these days and mostly appears in older literature. I hope that helps.
