    Default Pickups

Sorry, all my basses still have their original PUPs, so can't help you with this.

What do you prefer? J-style? P-style? Soapbar? Any brands you prefer?

I agree with TM. It is a hard question. I do not llike the P/J arrangement, but this is just a question of esthetics. My skills with a soddering iron and my bank balance don't really lend them selves to swapping out a set of PUPs on one of the basses to try something else. If I ever get there, though I may be tempted to swap out the original Fenders on teh Jazz for a set Nordstrands.

I personally feel that the pickups you choose is an individual choice. Depending on the sound you want to attain. I don't care for the ones that come stock in mass produced basses. I have 3 basses now each a form of a precision bass but each with its own sound. I have a 94 MIM P with active EMG PAX pickups in it. I use this mosty for hard rock/progressive rock. I have a 2012 Squier P wim passive EMG GZR's in it which I use for play old style metal. Sabbath, Blue Öyster Cult etc. Then I have my Crackercaster 456 with Nordstrand pickup in it I use mostly for blues.

The best precision bass pickup I've ever tried is the Klein Epic '62 P bass pickup. It sounds exactly like the bass tone on Santana's "Oye Como Va." Rich, resonant low mids . . .

Way late to this party :-) the answer is.....it depends. there are so many good pickups out there it depends on what tone you want to get. I have two Ps. One as a set of Geezer Butler EMGs that are aggressive and rock! The other has a set of DiMarzio Ultra Ps a little more vintage sounding but with a modern edge. Again, its a matter of personal taste. I also have a Fender PJ which sounds great and a Spector with Bartolini pickups. It sounds great but a lot darker. They all sound different to my ears, but none of them sound bad. Just different. Again "it depends" on what you want/like in tone. You can get a really nice set of pickups for just about 60 bucks.

    LW Gold Standard 5
    Carvin/Kiesel - Icon5, BB75, PB5, LB70
Fender - Pbass (DiMarzio Ultra P pickups, Warmoth Jazz neck), American Deluxe PJ, MIJ Walnut Jazz, American Elite Jazz
    Alembic Spoiler
    Rickenbacker 4003s
    Rickenbacker 4001 (1977)
    Spector Euro 4 LX
    Ken Smith BT4
    Musicman Stingray
Power by Carvin B1000 through Markbass 2x10 Traveler (x2) (MarkBass Nano for practice/small gigs)

You can also make your own, there are tons of how to vids/sites.. Pickups aren't that complicated, the variations seems endless and making your own you can play around with specific parameters... if that's your thing.
